Celebrating great teachers

16th October 2023

Today we celebrate our class of 2022-23 through a presentation at Guildford Cathedral. We are delighted to be joining with South Farnham SCITT to celebrate teachers starting out on their new career. Teachers from nursery classrooms will sit side by side with those teaching in primary, secondary and sixth form provision. This got me thinking about teaching in all these different phases and what is actually the same.

I asked some experienced colleagues from different phases what they thought made an 'impactful' teacher, and my own teens at home too. Whilst their choice of language was slightly different, the essence of what they all said was very similar and distilled down into these four strands:

  • Build relationships - invest in building relationships with your pupils, colleagues, your parent community and other professionals. These relationships show that you care and respect the individuals that are part of our collective community.
  • Be positive - as teachers we use thousands of words every day. Sometimes we have the luxury of carefully considering our response and at other times we have to think on our feet. Use words to build people up, recognise their effort and celebrate their success. A school that is positive is a school where pupils thrive.
  • Teach great lessons - this might seem obvious but being engaging, passionate and enthusiastic will encourage pupils to share this passion too.
  • Be proud - teaching is a wonderful profession and being in a school is a rewarding place to be. Be proud of all that you, and your pupils, have achieved already and all that is still to come.

As we say goodbye to trainees from last year, we welcome our cohort of 23-24 as they have just completed their first half term. What an engaged and enthusiastic group they are! Representing 11 secondary subjects, we are thoroughly enjoying working with them and their mentors.

Finally, believe it or not, we are also recruiting for our class of 24-25 already! Applications opened last week and we have met a wonderful group of candidates in the last week.

As a SCITT team, we believe passionately that creating the next generation of teachers will allow our profession to develop and evolve. We love talking about the programme and enthusing those just starting out on their teaching career. Our partnership with Surrey South Farnham SCITT continues to develop and we are happy to support anyone in our trust community or beyond thinking of training to teach. Please contact us if you are curious.

In the meantime, half term is calling and we can all celebrate our big and little wins of the first half term. Enjoy the break, recharge the batteries and then let’s do it all again for the schools and pupils that we are all so proud of!
