An opportunity for brave innovation

9th October 2023

It is very easy for us, on both a professional and personal level, to work within a predictable repeat cycle of decisions, choices or actions - whether it be our evening meal repertoire, selection of holiday destinations or various things we professionally might or indeed might not do.

As part of the remit of the former George Abbot Teaching School, we provided opportunities for teachers to engage in research activities working with the Enquiring Teachers programme. This programme provided opportunities for cross-phase working as well as cross-sector working for colleagues across Learning Partners and alongside our colleagues at RGS Guildford, and more recently with colleagues from St John’s Leatherhead and Epsom College.

Providing opportunities for teachers to engage in their own classroom-based inquiry is important and remains a priority for the trust’s School Improvement Team. There is more research evidence than ever before concerning where our energies are best directed. We sometimes however need encouragement to boldly explore this research evidence and to courageously try it out for ourselves.

I would like to enable colleagues across our schools to undertake research inquiry and to work towards the Certificate in Education Research and Inquiry with the Chartered College of Teaching. This stand-alone qualification will gain credits to work towards Chartered Teacher Status and will involve planning and implementing a small-scale inquiry project within the classroom. The specific theme may be best agreed with the leader of teaching and learning within each school, but common themes might include:

  • Assessment
  • Feedback and marking
  • Cognitive science (retrieval, interleaving, metacognition, dual coding)
  • Questioning
  • Scaffolding and Modelling
  • Supporting EAL learners, oracy or vocabulary acquisition

As a programme member you will have access to Chartered College resources to support the exploration of your research theme and you will be supported in the wider approach to research through a 6-8 hour online course. This will help guide the planning and implementation of your selected inquiry project. As an outcome, all programme members need to produce a written report and a research poster outlining their work.

I am currently seeking teachers who will be willing to join a cohort of teachers from RGS Guildford and who will be in a position to start this work after half-term. Please email your details to me at aroach@learningpartners.org before half-term. Should you require further information, it is available here: https://chartered.college/certificate/

I do hope that this opportunity will be of interest to you.
