The Big Help Out

5th May 2023

Well this week I’m feeling rather privileged as I get to write the bulletin during an historic event, King Charles III Coronation. Saturday 6th May of course sees that actual Coronation ceremony with all the pomp and circumstance which it promises.

I know that our schools have been busy preparing for such an event, pupils have been arriving in a swathe of red, white, and blue, and union jack bunting adorns the corridors, classrooms, and railings of our schools.

Whilst the King himself is not due to visit Guildford this weekend, there have been a couple of occasions that some of you may remember when he visited the local area whilst holding the title of Prince Charles.

Prince Charles visited Guildford Cathedral for a carol concert back in December 1981, a venue used by some of our Learning Partner schools in the modern day to also hold concerts. At the time, records seem to show that it was Princess Diana who stole the show and was a real hit with locals. The last recorded visit I could find was Prince Charles’ visit to the Fire Station on Ladymead in December 1999 but if any of you in your schools have better recollections or visits then do shout!

Whilst we have all been gifted an additional bank holiday, the King has declared that this should be focussed on community. This day is known as the Big Help Out.

The aim of The Big Help Out is to use volunteering to bring communities together and create a lasting volunteering legacy from the Coronation Weekend.

I know many of our school children are involved in both their school and local communities with this initiative. Some of the community events planned in our school include; litter picks of the local area, a group of year 4 pupils who have written books and are going to read and share these with a local playgroup as well as visits to care homes and thank you parties for our school volunteers. I am sure there are many more that we will hear about. Volunteering and supporting our communities for the better is an initiative we promote at Learning Partners as part of our Trust Dozen, where we aim to prepare young people for the next step in their lives as responsible citizens.

We are lucky to have volunteering in abundance; local governors, trustees, and our staff in particular running extra-curricular activities, hosting concerts, supporting residentials, day trips and sporting events. You, our volunteers really are our unsung heroes helping our Learning Partners community. We thank you.

Whatever you choose to do this weekend, at the very least enjoy being with family and friends.
